Kearney, NE – The Tri-City Storm (26-16-1-1) were defeated 4-1 Friday night by The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (17-21-6-1). The Storm’s latest loss came with a hefty price tag. Goalie Jake Barczewski was forced to leave the game midway through the 3rd period with a lower body injury. Barczewski’s injury came just 1 game after replacing injured Filip Larsson vs The Des Moines Buccaneers.
Cedar Rapids’ Jordan Timmons back-handed his 15th goal of the season, unassisted, 6:54 into the 1st period. A slashing call on Noah Weber at the 13:53 mark led to the game winning goal by Nathan Smith (Cedar Rapids). Smith’s power play goal at 15:06 was his 10th of the season. Assists were credited to Matt Denman and Roman Ahcan. Cedar Rapids would take a 2-0 tilt into the 2nd period, out shooting The Storm 11-7.
The Storm clawed their way back into the game, scoring the only goal in the 2nd period. Captain Adam Goodsir tallied his 8th goal of the season at the 17:16 mark. Assists were credited to Connor McMenamin and Mike Koster. Tri-City out shot Cedar Rapids 9-6 in the 2nd, but trailed 2-1 going into the 3rd.
The 3rd period is where disaster struck, or RoughRiders’ Harrison Roy. Roy struck Storm goalie, Jake Barczewski on a breakaway chance, injuring Barczewski. Jake managed to stay in the game, making 4 more saves before being replaced by Connor Hopkins 10:18 into the 3rd period. Barczewski stopped 19 of 21 shots for a .905 save percentage.
The injury allowed Connor Hopkins to make his USHL debut. Unfortunately, The RoughRiders capitalized on his late period entrance in less than 5 minutes. Cedar Rapids’ Marek Valach potted his 16th goal of the season at the 15:09 mark. The single assist was credited to Jordan Timmons. Connor was pulled for the extra attacker with 2:15 left in regulation. The RoughRiders wasted no time taking advantage of the empty net. Roman Ahcan (Cedar Rapids) buried his 8th goal of the season, unassisted, 10 seconds after Hopkins had made his way to the bench. Connor Hopkins would finish his debut with 1 save on 2 shots and a .500 save percentage in 9:32 total time on ice.
