Kearney, NE – The Tri-City Storm (29-20-1-2) failed to corral The Sioux Falls Stampede (30-15-4-4) Saturday night at The Viaero Center. Filip Forsmark found net twice, as well as Tyler Ward (once), but would ultimately lose to The Stampede 4-3. Sioux Falls’ game winning goal was scored with only 39 seconds remaining in regulation. With the loss, Tri-City drops back to 6th place in The West, as The Lincoln Stars (5th in West) defeated The Youngstown Phantoms 2-1 in a shootout.
Kirill Panyukov of The Stampede was first to strike on an early power play. Panyukov’s 14th goal of the season came at the 3:13 mark in the 1st period and was unassisted. The Storm would answer 12 minutes later from a hairline pass by Johnny McDermott, between Stampede goalie Mikhail Berdin’s stick and pads, and finished with a backhander by Tyler Ward. The tying goal was Ward’s 10th of the season. Johnny McDermott was credited the lone assist. Tri-City and Sioux Falls would end the period knotted at 1 with The Storm out shooting the Stampede 17-9.
It was back to work in the 2nd period for The Storm. They tripled The Stampede’s shots on goal with an 18-6 shot advantage through the period. Filip Forsmark faked right and went left on the doorstep, effectively shooting just past Berdin’s outstretched leg. His 8th of the year came on the power play at the 9:34 mark. Assist was credited to Blais Richartz. Tri-City would carry a 2-1 lead into the final period.
The second half of the 3rd period was a roller coaster ride. The Stampede punished The Storm on the power play with quick, back-and-forth, face off circle to face off circle passing between Reid Stefanson and Kirill Panyukov. Stefanson would capitalize on a scrambling Jake Barczewski to tie the game. Stefanson’s goal was his 13th of the season. Assists credited to Kirill Panyukov and Adam Dawe. Less than 3 minutes later, Colin Swoyer would bury his 5th of the season, making it 3-2 in favor of The Stampede. Adam Dawe was credited his 2nd assist of the night and Carson Dimoff was credited with the secondary assist. The Storm’s Filip Forsmark worked some magic on the power play and jammed one past Berdin to even the score once more. Forsmark’s tally was his 2nd of the night and 9th of the season. The single assist was credited to Mike Koster.
After an intense back-and-forth battle all period, disaster struck for The Storm. Colin Swoyer of The Stampede fired a missile from the right boards that somehow made it through 3 players and past Storm goalie Jake Barczewski. Swoyer’s game winning goal was his 2nd of the game and 6th of the season. Kevin Conley and Jaxon Nelson were credited with the assists. A pure heart breaker with only 39 seconds remaining in regulation. The Storm would finish the remaining 21 seconds of the game on the man advantage, but failed to capitalize. Shots were even at 10 through the 3rd period. Stampede took home the 2 points with a 4-3 victory over The Storm.
